Course objectives

The aim of this course is to provide doctoral students with theoretical bases and practical
experience in different approaches to microscopy imaging of biological samples. The lessons will
cover fluorescence, confocal and electron microscopy techniques, including alternative labelling
methods and practical sessions with hands-on experience.

Results of learning outcomes

• Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the modules, students shall know the basic notions of fluorescence, confocal, super-resolution and electron microscopy. They will also have experienced the use of different
microscopes and imaging techniques.
• Applying knowledge and understanding

At the end of the module, students shall know which imaging technique should be used to address specific biological questions and be able to choose the one that suits their own needs within their PhD project.

Program

The course will be divided into 3 modules for a total of 12 hours.

• Fluorescence, confocal and super-resolution imaging of live and fixed samples", 4 hours,
Andrea Genre;
• “From tissue preparation to confocal imaging”, 4 hours, Giacomo Donati;

• Transmission electron microscopy”, 4 hours, Marta Vallino.

Course delivery

The course will be held in person and attendance is limited to 6 students due to space limitation in the microscope rooms.
