Course objectives

To empower PhD students in terms of science communication and public engagement activities; To provide basic knowledge of science communication and the main means of communication; To provide practical skills in science communication approaches.

Program

1-Introduction to Science Communication (SC) (importance of SC for scientists and society)

• Definition of Science Communication and public engagement (PE)
• Phases of Science Communication
• Personal benefits and benefits to wider society
• Science Communication methods: assessment of the target audience; Direct and indirect communication methods

2-Communication in a scientific context (theory and practice):

• Paper writing: improving the impact of your research through better scientific writing, and an enhanced appreciation of bibliometrics and scientific publishing
• At the conference: knowledge transfer in a conference setting; preparing and planning conference poster/oral presentations; poster design from the viewer’s perspective
• Communication plan (in a Project Management context): project management principles; how to build up a communication plan for a project 

3-Communication out with the scientific context (public engagement):

• PE: examples and approaches
• Scientific writing for the public
• Social media
