Phd thesis

Ecology, distribution and dispersal of the hypogean invertebrate fauna in a climate change scenario.

DESCRIPTION

The fact that the caves are semi-closed systems with an almost constant temperature makes them almost ideal sites where to study the effect of temperature on ecosystems. It will thus be possible to assess the relative role of global and local factors that affect hypogean ecosystems, with special reference to temperature alterations. Ecosystems are generally characterized by complex relations of energy fluxes and their modelization requires an interdisciplinary approach. Cave ecosystems offers unique opportunities from this point of view, being characterized by low abundance and diversity of organisms, receiving poor supplies of degradable organic matter, having simple trophic chains thus being relatively easy to be modelled. My PhD project focus on the study of the main ecological factors driving the presence of the cave dwelling arthropods (mainly spiders) within different type of subterranean environments and on the development of statical models to describe the relation existing between the species and the environmental drivers occurring underground. The final aim is the understanding of the ecological shifts occurring underground in relation to global warming. In particular, I am carrying out several case studies in order to investigate those topics both from the local and the regional point of view.
