Phd thesis

In my PhD thesis , I study  the bird community above the treeline (ecotone zone) in alpine habitats. Along an altitudinal gradient I want to identify key habitat characteristics which are influencing bird diversity in the ecotone in oder to develop management strategies that may compensate for potentially negative effects of treeline advance. Furthermore my aim is to understand the mechanisms underpinning the distribution of bird populations along altitudinal gradients.  Therefore I am combining measurements of reproductive success and finescale-species habitat associations focussing on shrub (dunnock, lesser whitethroat and linnet)- and open nesting species (wheatear and water pipit) above the treeline.

Research activities

I started my biology studies in 2007 and finished my MSc thesis in the year 2014 in Potsdam/Germany. In my thesis I measured fecal glucocorticoid metabolites to evaluate environmental factors as potential stressors in the nest surrounding of White-tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla).  Later on I worked in several studies (University of Groningen, NL; Amur Bird Project, Russia, Tier3 solutions company, Germany) as field assistant and gained experience in nest monitoring, nest search , telemetry, bird ringing and camera trap work. In the year 2014 I also got my ringing licence of the  Hiddensee bird ringing centre in Germany.
