Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organisms Workshop 10-12 Febbraio 2012

Published: Tuesday, June 7, 2016

Dear Colleague,

we are pleased to announce that pre-registration is now open for the Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organisms Workshop taking place in Turin from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th February 2012
The workshop will take place at the Department of Animal and Human Biology (Via Accademia Albertina 13, Turin). We plan to open the workshop around 9am on Saturday and close it approximately 4 or 5pm on Sunday. Because we expect that people will travel to Turin on Friday, we are also going to have a welcome reception at the Department on Friday evening (probably around 5 or 6 pm onwards).

The workshop is aimed primarily at researchers working on simultaneously hermaphroditic organisms. Contribution on sexual selection and related topics in simultaneous hermaphrodites are particularly welcome, following on from recent meetings in Montpellier 2009, Amsterdam 2010 and Basel 2011. However, we may accept contribution on related topics and different perspectives, depending on the number of participants. We think that giving a talk is an important part of the meeting and that it favors discussion. Therefore, it would be great to have at least one talk per research team. You don't really need to present data and results. Instead, the point is to keep everyone up-to-date on our current research projects and to share our perspectives on the main topic of the meeting. So if you would like to give a talk, please let us know with a tentative title. At this stage you don’t need to submit an abstract (deadline for abstract submission to dasa.schleicherova@unito.it is January 14th, 2012). Please keep in mind that, because the emphasis is on discussion, we will only have about 10 contributed talk slots, and so each research group should aim to give only 1 or 2 talks.
Please also note that there will not be a formal poster session, but non-speaking participants are welcome to bring along a poster to display in the area where we will serve refreshments.

We invite you (and other members of your lab) to register for the workshop by e-mailing the details requested below to dasa.schleicherova@unito.it. The deadline for registration is December 20th, 2012.

We expect that our funding should cover daytime refreshments, excluding the conference dinner on Saturday evening for which we are checking for a cheap but nice restaurant in the centre of Turin.

We suggest that you book your room at one of the following accommodation:

- Hotel San Carlo, a simple, small and old hotel, conveniently located hotel in the pedestrian-only area in the centre of Turin (http://www.albergosancarlo.it). The Hotel San Carlo is 10 minutes walk from Porta Nuova railway station and 8 minutes walk from our Department. The rates are 55 euros per night (single room, breakfast not included, but you may have cappuccino and brioche at a bar nearby). They also have thirteen double rooms which cost 85 euros per room per night (breakfast not included). They have a few 3--bed rooms (info@albergosancarlo.it).
- Le Petit Hotel, a simple, small hotel, located in a pedestrian-only street in the centre of Turin (http://www.lepetithotel.it). The Petit Hotel is 15 minutes walk from Porta Nuova railway station and 15 minutes walk from our Department. The rates are 70 euros (single room) and 110 euros (double room) (breakfast included). They also have three 3--bed rooms (info@lepetithotel.it).
Please contact them directly to make your arrangements/payments, and mention the Department of Animal and Human Biology when you book to get the special rates.

If you wish to find a cheaper accommodation in a hostel, please contact:
- Open 011, House of Youth Mobility and Interculture (Corso Venezia 11, Turin, http://www.keluar.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=53&lang=en ). The hostel is not walking distance and you will need to take a bus to the Department. The hostel offers rooms with private bathroom (with sheets and blankets, towels not included). The 2012-rates are 33.50 euros for single rooms, 23.50 euros per person for double rooms, 19.50 euros per person for 3-4 bed rooms. Breakfast is included.
Finally, we will also try to find floor space accommodations in the apartments of people in our group (just bring along a mat and a sleeping bag) – if you wish to be accommodated in this way, please let us know (see the form below). Please note that we will be able to offer just a few accomodations like these.

If you have any problem or question, please let us know. We'll do our best to help you.
Please feel free to forward this message to anyone who may be interested.

Thank you very much for you time. We are looking forward to meeting all of you in Turin next February!

Best wishes,

Gabriella Sella, Cristina Lorenzi and Dasa Schleicherova
