Structure of the PhD

Duration, Admission, Scholarships
The PhD programme in Biology and Biotechnology has an expected length of 3 years. About 8-12 students enter the programme every year. The Course aims at selecting the best candidates applying from all over the country as well as from abroad. Admission is by competition which is open to people of all ages and citizenship who already have a Diploma di Laurea (vecchio ordinamento) or Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale (nuovo ordinamento), issued in Italy, or an academic qualification of equivalent level issued by a foreign university and recognized by the academic authorities, or by interuniversity agreement of cooperation and mobility
Competitions are held annually, with details being published within the Summer of each year.
For full information, see the page of University of Torino- Research.
Courses will start the following January.
Most available positions are supported by scholarships from the University of Torino or from other institutions (see below). The annual scholarship amounts to around 13,638 euros. For periods of study abroad (up to 9 months) the scholarship value is increased by 50%.

Project choice and matching of tutors with PhD students
We follow the rules proposed by the University of Turin: upon passing the entry exam, the candidate will choose the subject considering that the scholarships associated to the projects have two origins:
- Specific projects (MIUR, CRT, EU) which are associated to a specific tutor who is responsible for the funding: in this case, the candidate will contact the tutor directly.
- General scholarships from the MIUR: in this case, the candidate who passed the entry exam will choose among the projects that are posted on line before the selection.

The PhD committee, and the PhD program coordinator will ensure that a general fairness in resource allocation will be followed, particularly related to Art. 14 (each Tutor shall not supervise more than two students for each cycle).

Criteria for yearly evaluation of each PhD student
PhD students are avaluated on a yearly base through an oral presentation of their results and a written report, plus a detailed form reporting all the courses and seminars they have followed, the conferences they have attended  and their research activity. Candidates are expected to present their results in National and International congresses and at least one manuscript should be submitted or accepted in a peer reviewed journal for the PhD title to be assigned.
